Yesterday, Governor Carcieri went on right-wing radio host John DePetro's show yesterday morning and said that he would "love" to eliminate the Rhode Island state income tax. The Governor made it sound like this would help everyday Rhode Islanders, but when asked how he would make up the $1.1 billion in revenue that would be lost, Carcieri said he would rather tax "consumption".

In other words, Carcieri would increase the sales tax, which takes a bigger percentage bite out of working- and middle-class people's incomes than it does the wealthy, in order to cut the income tax. However you slice it, the end result will be a more regressive tax system, with a smaller portion of taxes paid by corporations and wealthy Rhode Islanders, and more paid by the rest of us.
