John Medeiros is from Rhode Island !
If you visit the internets, which, of course, you do or you would not be here, then you may well have seen this Apology published first in a Minnesota paper.
Yes, John Medeiros lives in Minnesota and directs his apology to one local politician (or ex-politician? ).
John is from Rhode Island!
I can say that through his work at the International Institute of RI & mine at John Hope Settlement House, we became friends.
He is a wonderful person & I am happy this letter is receiving acclaim.
John is truly a mensch & his brother is a gentleman, too.

Happy Birthday, Bryan Principe ! My [city] Councilman !
It's Bryan's Birthday, and I thought I would post his little bio...

I nonetheless wanted to save it, to read again & to share.
Recently thanks to Facebook, I have begun to become friends with Leora. . .
It's a small world. Sometimes I misread people in a big way. Seems to happen despite demographic commonalities !

Disagreement is one thing. Threats and Violence will be deleted.
This blog receives few comments and I have occasionally kept the spam when it is polite and doesn't take up a page.
I have no quarrel with disagreement and someone sharing information (as someone did recently) which she thinks is relevant. Or he.
Profanity does not always bother me any more than religiosity, although both can be off-putting.
When someone's comment is explicitly violent -- whether the violence is directed at me or at someone else makes no difference -- I will delete that comment.
This little blog is not a place for threats against anyone.
Some profanity will be removed promptly too.
There are certain insults I have a low tolerance for.
When I find a site deeply objectionable, I find it exceedingly easy to remove it from my screen, easier, in fact, than it is to change a radio station or tv channel.
On a funny note:
Years ago I shared an office with a friend who favored a radio program of a famous right wing commentator. We were both in and out of the office quite often. If I returned, and she was listening, I never asked her to turn it off, but sometimes I did ask her to lower the volume. Our desks were adjacent. She did ~ our friendship never suffered ( at least not to my knowledge and truly she helped me get that job, and I won't forget that kindness ). This was in 1989 !
I have been searching for this friend on facebook and not found her (she moved to Boston some time ago) and do not know if her last name has changed....

Solidarity with Libraries Across the Pond
I am a library lover and cannot remember any time in my life without them. Ok, my first steps may not have been taken inside one (wait, maybe they were !?), and I didn't meet my spouse there, but perhaps the next one. The only libraries not dear to my heart are the expensive elite ones, the closed ones.
Thanks to Former Rhode Islander (he used to write for the Providence Journal), Djelloul Marbrook, I have learned about a campaign in support of libraries in the UK.
The facebook page is called, Fight for Libraries, campaign from The Bookseller.
I was the 2,996th person to "like" this, and I see the number has reached 3,011.

We are fighting for public libraries because they form an essential seed-bed for the wider reading culture of the nation, a culture from which the whole of society benefits.
Libraries seed communities with books and ideas in a way which is irreplaceable. They provide books to people who wouldn’t otherwise see or afford them, the youngest in society, the oldest, and people on low incomes. They also provide free internet access to the 27% of the population who still aren’t online at home.
Libraries are also a forum where authors and readers can come together in a neutral, unbiased space - free from commercial pressures.
Most importantly they are curated by professional librarians who provide expert guidance for readers, helping people find the books and information they need, again free from commercial considerations.
Readers, reading and the values imparted are essential to any civilised society – indeed it seems impossible to conceive a civilisation without libraries.
We oppose the arbitrary, disproportionate and wantonly destructive nature of the cuts to the national library service now underway, and we will do everything we can to mobilise the entire book world in libraries’ defence.

In 2007, the Justice for Janitors campaign spread beyond Providence, and contracted Amica janitors in Lincoln went on strike for fair treatment and a voice on the job. Their courage, your support, and Amica’s intervention opened the door for hundreds of Rhode Island contracted janitors outside of Providence to get a voice on the job and better working conditions. Now, Amica is dishonoring the sacrifice of those contracted janitors by bringing in Martins Maintenance, which has already demonstrated its inhumane and repressive treatment of workers, and has made no effort to hire the long-time Amica subcontracted janitors. Come join us on Thursday to remind Amica that their courageous contracted janitors deserve to work for a responsible contractor that will retain them at the site and will honor the standards they have sacrificed so much for.

Thank You & All Healing Wishes to Pam Spaulding
Pam, is the Blogmistress of Pam's House Blend.
We have never met, but thanks to her blog ( and to a lesser degree, facebook ), I know quite a bit about her family, including, of course, the dogs, her passions ( justice and more ) and her surgery today.
It may be happening as I type this, might be over, might be on the edge of beginning.
It is supposed to be laproscopic which is the way my son's appendectomy was....
'The Blend ' is very much a community affair, and always worth visiting.
I cannot remember how I first found it, but I think it was thanks to Jesus' General. Then again, it may have been Pam's House Blend which introduced me to the General.
On occasions, I have found certain public computers have filtered out Pam's House Blend, and I have complained each time.
Dear Pam, I wish you Healing and Peace and all the best to Everyone in your family.

Three Cheers for the Westerly ( RI ) Friends' Meeting
The Friend | Conscientious objector denied status and told Quakers are a cult
I was an attender of the Providence Monthly Meeting of Friends for a long time. It is true that Quakerism defies easy description, but really isn't that true of all religious practices ?
Years ago I attended a conference on the African-American Church Response to AIDS. It was hosted by the Pond Street Baptist Church in Providence. The keynote speaker was Reverend Arlene Churn ( I hope I am not misspelling her name ) from southern New Jersey. I found her purely inspiring ( and funny and more ). One of my friends found her testimony to be lacking in Christianity.
I don't know Michael Izbicki, but I have known lots of Quakers. Most of them believed in Christ in one way or another. Not all. The history of Quakerism as a Protestant sect is very clear.
George Fox used to hit people with Bibles on occasion ! Of course, he was not received with great love by many Christians at the time.

Lilly Rivlin's Documentary about Grace Paley is playing there this weekend.

It is a very short youtube video.
I am very much looking forward to seeing this documentary.
Although I have not met Lilly Rivlin, we have exchanged emails, and she lives in the same building in New York City that my Aunt Sue and Uncle Peter live.
It's an enormous building for artists and so they may have never met, but then again probably entering or leaving .... And my relatives have lived there a long time, and I have visited, so perhaps I "met" Lilly once holding a door for me ( or vice versa )...
I love Small World stories.

Rooting for Rich and John (Serious as a Heart Procedure)
I learned that today, two sportscasters are having procedures, even as I type this!
Rich Kincaide is also a blogger and writer and man with a sense of humor and justice. We have never met in person, but have exchanged enough emails and commentary (and are friends on facebook too)for me to be grateful for his presence.
Everybody Wants To Read My Blog is worth visiting every day. He has kindly included this blog in his blogroll, and wow, I like the company he's included us with.
Rich is the author of, The Gods of Olympia Stadium: Legends of the Detroit Red Wings(September, 2003). Jackson Street Books can probably help you locate a copy.

John Minko, works for WFAN, a NY radio station, "home of the New York Mets", and is affectionately known as the MinkMan. Mike Francesa announced yesterday that John is having bypass surgery today. John, is someone I have never exchanged emails with, but I have enjoyed hearing his voice for years. He has a sense of humor, a love of sports, a humility all of which are endearing.
On facebook there is a fan page for John Minko.
I am grateful for the existence of modern medicine!
And Henry Shelton is doing much better, according to Richard Walton who has shared emails from Carol with a group of us.

El 27 de noviembre, el día más atareado en el calendario Americano de ventas y el inicio internacional no-oficial de las compras de Navidad, miles de activistas y ciudadanos concientes, en 65 países, se desintoxicarán del consume durante 24 horas, como parte del Día de no Comprar Nada, un fenómeno global que se originó en Vancouver, Canadá.
Las razones para participar en el Día de no Comprar Nada son tan variadas como las personas que eligen participar. Algunas lo ven como un escape de los trucos mentales de mercadeo y de la histeria de consumismo que caracteriza la época y nuestra cultura en general. Otros utilizan la oportunidad para exponer las consecuencias ambientales y éticas del exceso en consumo.
En Providence, como parte del Día Internacional de no Comprar Nada, llevamos a cabo un intercambio de abrigos en el área verde de la Casa Estatal, directamente enfrente del centro comercial Providence Place. Contamos con más de 60 co-patrocinadores del evento — organizaciones comunitarias, iglesias, grupos ambientales y promotores de la paz, así como voluntarios que ayudan en la actividad.

It's Diana Abu-Jaber's Birthday!
Happy Birthday, Diana Abu-Jaber!
A few years ago. pure serendipity led me to the fiction of Diana. First I read Crescent and then I read Origins.
They are two very distinct novels.
I would recommend the former to anyone who loves books with food, the Middle East, Anne Tyler, Barbara Kingsolver, immigration dynamics, university town experiences, mysteries and more...
I recommend Origins to a my friends who are passionate about mysteries, upstate New York, family histories....this one has a flavor of Nevada Barr and a hint of Stephen King.
Diana, I hope this doesn't offend you!
Today is Diana's Birthday! Thanks to facebook, I consider her a friend; I know more about her than I do about some of my cousins...whether we ever meet face to face is irrelevant...this is one of the joys of "social networking"...

Thank You Ninja Nurse, Democommie And Patient Friends
I have been a deeply dormant blogger, but the encouragement of the NinjaNurse, and Democommie and the famous bloggers of Newport and Other Mysterious Settings is waking me from the slumber.
This past Saturday at a wonderful Halloween event in my neighborhood, I had the great fortune to see Alex Svoboda, my friend whose knee was so harmed by the authorities in Pawtucket and who works joyfully with the Wobblies. Incredibly there are still charges pending against her ( and one or two others ).
Grace Paley's Birthday is approaching.
Rhett Jones' spirit is, I'm sure, following this Obama Administration and football and theatre and Civil Rights.
Marsha Z. West is Dancing and somewhere laughing about silly people blogging in her Memory.
And Harold Rogovin? Somewhere making jokes in Yiddish and reflecting on Sacco and Vanzetti.

Lou Gehrig's Wisdom
"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.
"Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure, I'm lucky.
"When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift - that's something. When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies - that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter - that's something. When you have a father and a mother who work all their lives so you can have an education and build your body - it's a blessing. When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed - that's the finest I know.

This disease claimed the life of my friend Mona a few years ago. If we put the kind of resources into medical research that we do into weapons development wouldn't we have some treatment already...
